In memory of this brave ancient good boy, who died around this day in 79 AD during the eruption of Vesuvius. The poor watchdog was left tied to a post at the threshold of the house of Marcus Vesonius Primus, unable to escape as disaster struck Pompeii. With ash and pumice raining down, the dog tried for a time to stay above the rising debris and avoid being buried. Eventually his rope stopped him from climbing any higher and he was buried alive in the volcanic ash. In this cast made of his contorted body on its discovery in 1874 we can see the dog’s heavy bronze collar, and his open mouth and teeth as he struggled for air in his final moments.
